Why We Set Aside Two Hours
The standard new patient appointment at many dental offices runs 45 to 60 minutes. In that window, a hygienist can complete a cleaning and take a few x-rays, but there is limited time for anything more thorough. A dentist may spend 10 or 15 minutes reviewing findings before the appointment ends.
That model does not give us enough time to do the job properly. We schedule new patients for two full hours because a complete first-visit exam requires it. By the end of that appointment, you will have a documented picture of your oral health that neither you nor any future provider would be able to get from a 45-minute visit.
What the Two-Hour Appointment Includes
Your first visit at Coral West Dental covers the following:
- Complete health history assessment: Current medications, existing health conditions, prior dental work, and any concerns you have going into the appointment.
- Full-mouth x-rays: A complete set of digital x-rays documenting current tooth and bone levels throughout the entire mouth.
- Cone beam 3D imaging: A three-dimensional scan of your teeth, jaw, and airway that provides a level of diagnostic detail standard x-rays do not capture.
- Head and neck exam: External examination of the head and neck, including lymph nodes and jaw function.
- Intra-oral and extra-oral exam with photos: A thorough clinical exam of all teeth, soft tissues, and supporting structures, with photographs for documentation.
- Airway evaluation: An assessment of airway structure, which is relevant to conditions like sleep apnea that many patients do not associate with dental care.
- Gum health assessment: Measurement of gum pocket depths and evaluation of tissue condition throughout the mouth.
- Dietary and gut health discussion: Because oral health and systemic health are connected in ways that affect treatment, we discuss diet, gut health, and related habits as part of the complete picture.
- Orthodontic assessment: An evaluation of bite alignment and tooth positioning.
- Oral cancer screening: A visual and tactile examination of oral tissues for any signs of abnormality.
- Treatment recommendations: A full discussion of findings and what, if anything, should be addressed, presented in a way that makes sense to you.
What to Bring
Bring your insurance card and a list of current medications. If you have recent x-rays from a previous provider, those can be requested and forwarded in advance—but you do not need them before scheduling. We take a complete set at your first appointment regardless.
For Patients Returning After a Long Gap
Patients who have not seen a dentist in several years sometimes arrive at a first appointment expecting judgment about the gap or a long list of problems being delivered without context. That is not how we operate. The first visit is a diagnostic appointment. We document where things stand, explain what we find, and discuss what steps make sense going forward. Our goal is to make sure you leave with a plan you understand and can commit to—not to make the visit feel worse than it needs to be.
